Halloween has been one of my favorite holidays for as long as I can remember. A day dedicated to dressing up in fantasy costumes, receiving free candy, pranks, spooky decorations…it all inspires so much joy.

October had been my favorite month until last year. This halloween falls on the month that marks one year since Israel launched a full siege on Gaza. For a year we’ve witnessed a genocide and felt powerless to stop it. For a year we found our cries for justice dying in the noise of political theater, U.S. made bombs and the deafening silence of our own communities.

You’d think a genocide would demand attention. That after years of education on the holocaust and the genocide of indigenous Americans, we would be able to recognize our complicity in Israel’s terrorism. And yet, here we are, a year later. After protesting, boycotting, marching, occupying…any tactic we could possibly employ, after a year we still find ourselves here, with Israel’s terrorism bleeding into surrounding nations.

I created this piece as a sort of battle against the hopelessness I’ve been feeling. I still have a very hard time creating during these times but I’m going to continue to live, bear witness and speak out. I’m going to commit to remembering as many of the stories of the human beings Israel has martyred. And I’m going to do my best to help the people who are resisting in Palestine right now.

This piece was really fun to create and I’m hopeful it’ll spread some of the Halloween spirit I’ve come to look forward to every year. I also want it to materially help those most in need. My belief is that through my work as an artist, I can benefit the resistance by donating a portion of any profits I make. For this piece, I’m donating 20% to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, an officially recognized Palestinian organization that employs tens of thousands of health care workers and provides life saving medical services to Palestinians.
