I created this piece in celebration and deep love for my Jewishness, a Jewishness that isn’t tied to any nation, a Jewishness that knows diversity is the fabric of life
My understanding of my faith has always been rooted in the holiness of all life, in the deep unshakable belief that when I look in another person’s eyes, I see something within them that mirrors my own gaze. All of the world, the earth, the trees, the oceans the stars, and sky, every planet, universe and galaxy is sacred and part of the divine. We can be mirrors for the love we share or the hate we fuel with myths of scarcity.
When I protest in support of the Palestinian peoples’ right to return and in solidarity with indigenous communities’ right to land back, when I resist the colonizer instilled in my own mind, when I fight for a world where people are centered and not profit, I do so with lungs filled with the breath of faith: faith that it’s good and right to protect life, faith that we all play a part in healing this world.
I know that liberation can never come from bombs funded by the same people that enslaved my ancestors. I know there’s no justice in a land built on the forced expulsion and murder of innocents. I know there’s no conversation to be had with someone who twists my calls for peace into calls for abuse or justifications of wanton violence. The only conversations I want to have are about how we can ensure a ceasefire, how we can protect the vulnerable and how we can bring about justice in our lifetimes. To understand my perspective, you have to imagine that every person on this planet is your sibling, to understand why I cannot be Zionist you have to understand that I see all of the world as Eden. This is my Judaism and it is irrevocably tied up with the fight for a free Palestine.
